The architecture and design of the Tyonek Cultural Center in Alaska are based on a design framework that incorporates the cultural and environmental context of the area. The design principles focus on creating a unified whole that reflects the indigenous Tyonek Dena’ina people’s connection to the land and water, preserving the existing infrastructure of gravel roads, paths, and forest, emphasizing the importance of sharing and subsistence as cultural foundations, and addressing the challenges of climate change through high-performance building design. The Cultural Center aims to serve as a gathering place for the community to celebrate their heritage while adapting to the changing environmental conditions.
